Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday said that army is prepared to resist any evil force to protect the country’s independency and sovereignty.
She announced establishment of two more cantonments for the Bangladesh Army in a bid to turn the military into a modern and skilled force as per the Forces’ Goal 2030.
“Initiatives have been taken to build cantonments in Rajbari and Lebukhali of Barisal-Patuakhali. Process of building a cantonment has already began in Lebukhali while land has been identified in Rajbari for the use of army,” she said while addressing a Darbar of the army at Baliakandi in Rajbari district.
Earlier the PM witnessed winter exercise of 55 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army titled’ Assault River Crossing’ on the bank of Gorai River at a remote village named Sonakanda in Baliakandi under Rajbari District.
Addressing the Darbar the Premier said two infantry divisions of the army have already been formed in Sylhet [17 Infantry Division] and Ramu [10 Infantry Division] and a Composite Brigade has also been formed for construction and security of the Padma Bridge on the bank of Padma River.
Army has been digitalized as part of building the country as Digital Bangladesh, she said adding that internet facilities have been given to the all stages in army.
Recalling army’s role in nation building, the Prime Minister said the patriotic army helped keeping continuation of democratic advancement in the country during the January 5 parliamentary elections last year by discharging their duties neutrally and professionally.
She also said army attained name nationally and internationally by introducing National Identity Card and making a flawless voter lists in the country ahead of the 2008 elections.
She reminded the army personnel to keep in mind that people are the strength of the country and they are the part of the people. “So earning people’s confidence is very important,” she advised the army personnel.
Saying that army’s contribution in UN peacekeeping missions is well recognized globally, the PM said that Bangladesh is the top contributing country in the UN missions and her government has been keeping continuous efforts to increase numbers of troops in the UN missions.
She highlighted her government’s successes in different sector and mentioned about different steps taken for the benefits of the armed forces during the present and past tenures of the Awami League-government.
After the Darbar the Prime Minister took part in the lunch with all army officials and soldiers there.
Mock-war
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Defense Minister witnessed the mock-war on the bank of Gorai River at remote Sonakanda village of Baliakandi upazila in the district.
General Officer Commanding of The 55 infantry division Maj Gen SM Matiur Rahman organized the 2014-15 exercise where the army for the first time used a highly sophisticated drone to locate enemy position.
A total of 8000 army troops, and 265 Para-Commandos took part in the exercise which had begun on December 21.
Spokespersons of the 55 Infantry Division Lt Col Md Iftequr Rahman told newsmen that the exercise is an exceptional military operation among other conventional military operations and is meant to retain occupied land from the heavily equipped enemy armies.
