Expressing her firm confidence in Bangladesh army, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said this force, built with the Liberation War spirit, is more prepared than ever to resist any evil force. The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function arranged on the occasion of the war-maneuver of the 11-Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army at Swarnadwip alias Jahaijjar Char in Noakhali district. The exercise was organised under the management of the 93 Armour Brigade Group of 11 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. Brigadier General Sharif Ahsan led the exercise.
Terming the maneuver exercise a different one, she expressed satisfaction over the capability of the armed forces of the country. Referring to the forces’ Goal 2030, the Prime Minister said as part of its implementation, 10 and 17 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army as well as Artillery and Infantry Brigade along with some artillery, infantry and engineering units have been established. Besides, works on establishing large scale Cantonment at Lebukhali, Mithamoin and in an
area adjacent to the PadmaBridge are also progressing well, she added.
To face the challenge of the 21st century, Hasina said, a number of science and technology universities have been established in various Cantonments to advance the country in the era of science and technology. Besides, five more army medical colleges have also been set up in five Cantonments in the country while other facilities for the members of the force have also been increased under the new pay scale, she said. Describing the development story of Swarnadwip, the Prime Minister said it was a devastating Char and a haven for the pirates, and other criminals who had been creating obstacles to the works of the civil administration.
Realising the facts, her government in 2013 gave the responsibility to army for developing the area for establishing it as a reserved zone and their training spot alongside turning the area as a living place through improving law and order situation and afforestation. In just three years, an eye-catching development has been made in the Swarnadwip, while two cyclone shelters and a container based camp have also been established there, she said. Besides, step has also been taken to make the people living there self-dependent through various programmes under different ministries, she added. She distributed blankets among a number of cold stricken people of the Island.

The island popularly known as the Jahaijjar Char is situated at three metre height from sea level is about 360 sqkm in size. In 2013, the island was renamed as ‘Swarnadwip’ and the government allocated it to Bangladesh Army in 2013 for training as well as development of the island for habitation, improving law and order and afforestation. The Prime Minister inaugurated a multipurpose cyclone shelter centre and planted a sapling of a coconut tree. She also visited dairy farm of Bangladesh Army and coconut garden. Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army Lt Gen Anwar Hossain made a video presentation and briefed the Prime Minister about the stride made by Bangladesh Army to turn the once inaccessible island into a scenic and resourceful one and future plan to make it as full-fledged army training centre by the next 15 years.
