Bangladesh Army on Saturday started to work on the relief efforts and rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.
Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) Director Lt Col Rashidul Hasan confirmed this to The New Nation in the evening. They were seen patrolling the makeshift camps from Kutupalong to Teknaf set up along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway, our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent reports from the spot.
Since August 26, the administration, donors and NGOs have built 26,000 sheds in 12 slums in Ukhiya and Teknaf for the refugees, who entered Bangladesh to flee persecution in Myanmar.
The administration has been distributing cooked food among one lakh refugees for the last two days, Ali Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, said yesterday.
In Balukhali area of Ukhiya, 2,000 acres of land have been allocated for building 14,000 sheds for 85,000 Rohingya families. Mobile Courts have, meanwhile, arrested and punished 212 for extorting and swindling the refugees, the DC added. Twenty-two special police teams are maintaining law and order in the Rohingya settlements.
Eleven check posts run by police and Border Guards Bangladesh are preventing the refugees from spreading across the country. The check posts have intercepted 5,119 Rohingyas and sent them back to the camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, the Deputy Commissioner said.
