Rajib Hossain, who lost his arm after sandwiched between two speeding buses on Tuesday, was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from Samorita Hospital yesterday.
Rajib’s family transferred him to the DMCH as they are unable to bear the cost of treatment at the private hospital, ICU Medical officer of Samorita Hospital Ltd Dr Hossain told the journalists.
He regains consciousness time to time, but as he is under sedatives, he sleeps most of the time, the official said.
Till Wednesday morning, the medical bill at Samorita Hospital stood at Tk 1.26 lakh, which the family won’t afford it, Rajib’s maternal aunt said.
They paid around Tk 35,000 only and signed a bond to pay the rest of the money later, the family said. Rajib, 22, a third-year student of Government Titumir College, was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of Samorita Hospital.
“When he gains consciousness, he looks for his right arm, but he faints again soon afterwards,” the aunt added.
A team from Government Titumir College visited Rajib at Samorita Hospital and gave Tk 10,000 to his family members, family said. They also assured the family of further monetary assistance.
Meanwhile, Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan told the journalists that they had already arrested two of the bus drivers of BRTC and Swajan Paribohan. The drivers will be sent to the court today (Thursday).
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday directed the owners of two buses to bear all the treatment cost of Titumir College student Rajib Hossain who lost his right arm in a collision between the two buses in Bangla Motor area of Dhaka on Tuesday.
The court also issued a rule asking the government and the bus owners to explain in four weeks as to why they should not be directed to give Tk one crore to Rajib Hossain as compensation.
In the rule, the court also asked the government to show cause as to why they should not be directed to strictly enforce the relevant laws and rules for free movement of the people in the streets.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice A K M Jahirul Hoque passed the order and issued the rule after hearing a writ petition moved by a Supreme Court lawyer, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, in the public interest, seeking necessary order for the treatment of Rajib and ensuring free movement of people.
Barrister Kazal appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition, while Deputy Attorney General Aurobinda Roy stood for the state.
Eight respondents including Home Secretary, Road Transport and Bridges Secretary, IGP, DMP Commissioner have to comply with the rule within four weeks, the lawyer said.
