The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to suspended Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury for 15 days in the former Finance Minister SAMS Kibria killing case.
An HC bench comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo granted the bail on the grounds that Ariful’s mother is ill. The court also asked him to surrender
before the lower court on expiry of the bail.
Barrister Fida M Kamal and AM Imamuddin stood for Ariful Haque while Additional Attorney General M Mamtazuddin and Deputy Attorney General Dr M Bashirullah argued for the state.
Earlier, Ariful filed a petition with the HC seeking bail. Following the petition, the court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the suspended mayor will not be granted bail in the SAMS Kibria killing case. Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila on January 27, 2005.
