Arif confesses involvement in N`ganj killings

Former RAB officer Major Arif Hossain, on Wednesday confessed before a local court to his involvement in the abductions and killing of seven people in Narayanganj.Arif was arrested for his alleged link with the incident.Mamunur Rashid Mondal, officer-in-charge of district Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the seven-murder case said Arif made the confessional statement before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate AKM Mahiuddin.Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan, president of Narayanganj District Lawyers Association said Arif confessed to his involvement in the incident and described it in detail-from abductions to killings.He said the IO produced the former RAB official before to the court in the morning with an appeal to record his confessional statement under Section 164.He was taken to jail around 3:30pm after recording the statement, Sakhawat said.UNB adds: On May 17, police arrested two former officers of RAB-11 — Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Major Arif Hossain-from the Dhaka Cantonment for their alleged involvement in the killing of the seven people, including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.On the day, they were placed on a five-day remand. Later, the two former Rab officers were again put on an eight-day remand on May 22 and last on a five-day one on May 30.Another wanted former RAB officer Lt Commander MM Rana was arrested from the same area on May 18. He was first placed on a seven-day remand on the day of his arrest, eight-day one on May 25 and on a five-day remand on Monday.On April 27, Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted while they were going to capital Dhaka.Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.Following the seven murders, Shahidul Islam alias Shahid chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some RAB men killed Nazrul in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain and other suspects.
