Appointing political VCs damaged higher education

COUNTRY’S most of the running private universities and some public universities are stumbling due to absence of vice-chancellor, pro-vice chancellor or treasurer – the posts which remain vacant for many days. The vacancies have created serious problems at these universities as both academic and administrative functions are affected badly. Though much more harm has been done by politically appointed VCs under whom patronisation torture centres could be conducted by the students and they learnt how to become criminals and lose human values. They destroyed academic atmosphere at public universities and wrecked the future of some students helping them to be dangerous criminals. Good education is no concern of the government. Incompetent persons are more useful for incompetent government.
We are not only surprised but also shocked hearing the news from University Grants Commission that now 26 private universities are running without vice-chancellors, 79 without pro-vice-chancellors and 54 without treasurers. The UGC has described the situation at these private universities as ‘terrible’ while Private University Association leaders said that the situation resulted from lack of eligible candidates and the current selection procedures.
As for public universities, the Barishal University authorities have postponed the admission tests for the 2019-20 academic session as the vital positions of vice-chancellor, registrar and treasurer at the university have been vacant for months. Acting vice-chancellors now run Chattogram University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj. Educationist said that the situation at these universities is nothing different from other universities of the country.
Against this backdrop, the UGC urged the Education Ministry to take immediate steps for appointing vice-chancellors, pro-vice chancellors and treasurers against the vacant posts at universities. But it is better to leave these positions vacant than appointing unworthy persons for their political usefulness. As VCs and others who are helpful for criminalisation of students.
Educationists said that the state, the education system and the judiciary are not working well at all and such vacancies at these universities are proofs of this chaotic situation. The government and the trustee board members, including the owners and the sponsors, of the private universities concerned should seriously think about the situation.
We want to save the higher education from chaos and conflict of criminalised politics, which has been created with the help of politically appointed high officials at the universities. We have to prove that we are concerned about the damage being done to higher education under this government. The VCs and other responsible university officials are to be appointed for their human qualities and competence and not for inducing criminalised politics. The parents do not send their children to universities to come out as cruel criminals. The issue is the national need for producing competent human beings good for building a better future.
