The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday fixed February 2 for hearing the appeal filed by condemned war crimes criminal Mir Quasem Ali against his death sentence.A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, set the date during court proceedings in the morning. The bench had fixed yesterday(Wednesday) to announce the date as the appeal of Mir Quasem, also a policymaker of Jamaat-e-Islami, came up in the hearing list of the apex court on Tuesday morning. Additional Attorney General Murad Reza said both the defence and the prosecution submitted the concise statements of the appeal to the Appellate Division. The SC can start the hearing now, he added.On May 28 and August 18, 2015, the SC asked the defence and prosecution to submit the concise statements of the appeal.On November 30, 2014, Mir Quasem Ali had filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. On November 2 in the same year, the tribunal had condemned Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
