The BNP on Wednesday appealed against the rejection of its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s nominations in three constituencies.
The appeal has been filed with the Election Commission.
“EC cancelled Begum Khaleda Zia’s candidacy unjustly. We believe had the Election Commission given a fair decision, Khaleda Zia would not have been, sidelined,” BNP Law Affairs Secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal told it to the journalists after submitting the petition in the Election Commission in Agargaon in the capital.
Kaiser Kamal led a six-member team to submit the petition.
He said that without Khaleda Zia’s participation, the ensuing national polls will become a farce.
The BNP leader referred to a High Court verdict about Khaleda Zia’s participation in the election, that according to Article 66 of the Constitution, appeal is continuation of a trial.
He said, “Khaleda Zia’s nomination rejection for the graft cases is illegal, as appeal is going on in both the cases.”
“If the EC wants to hold fair and inclusive polls, EC should accept her (Khaleda’s) nominations as there are many past examples considering it,” Kaiser Kamal said.
Three nominations were submitted on behalf of Khaleda for contesting in the Parliamentary election from Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7.
The Returning Officers have cancelled all three nominations of the BNP Cheif after the scrutiny due to her conviction in two graft cases for which she is now in jail.
