Apparel sector to hit $50b export target by 2021: Amu

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said Bangladesh has been able to maintain a sustainable growth in the apparel sector overcoming international conspiracies and hoped the sector would be able to achieve US$50 billion export target by 2021.
“Our competitors have been hatching conspiracies against the apparel sector after accidents in Rana Plaza and Tajrin Fashion. But the government’s policy support, courage of the entrepreneurs and role of skilled workers have foiled such conspiracies,” Amu said while speaking at the inaugural programme of “17th Textech Bangladesh Expo 2016” at city’s Basundhara Convention Centre.
Conference and Exhibition Management Services Limited (CEMS) organized the event with its President Meherun N. Islam in the chair. State minister for textile and jute Mirza Azam, deputy high commissioner of India in Bangladesh Dr Adarsh Swaika, FBCCI’s first vice-president Md Shafiul Islam, BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman and BKMEA first vice- president A H Aslam Sunny, among others spoke at the programme.
Amu said Bangladesh has implemented a large number of programmes including development of workplace environment; improving the safety system; professional and health risks; fixation of minimum wage and inspection of factories at public and private initiatives. As a result, Bangladesh apparel sector is at the top position in the South and South-East Asia and second position in the world, he added.
Bangladesh now exports apparel products worth US$28 billion annually, he said and hoped the earning would double within the next five years.
Over 1050 companies from 23 countries are displaying garment’s latest technologies, fabrics, dyeing and chemicals in the four-day expo. It will remain open for visitors from 10am to 7.30pm everyday till September 3.
