Special Correspondent :
Bangladesh’s apparel exports have started picking up again this year after suffering a worst decline last year.
In the first ten months (July-April) of this fiscal, apparel export increased by 9.0 percent compared to the same period a year earlier on the back of improved infrastructure and manufacturing sustainability.
In last fiscal, Bangladesh’s apparel export recorded a 0.20 percent growth, which was the lowest in 15 years. The total value of apparel export stood at US$28.14 billion during the period.
Terming the export growth ‘encouraging’, Mahmud Hassan Khan Babu, Vice-President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters
Association, told The New Nation, “We anticipated the growth following tangible progress in factory remediation and recovery in global apparel trade.”
He said the country’s apparel industry has made tremendous progress in workplace safety, application of fourth generation technologies, workers’ skills and supply chain management over the last few years. At the same time, the industry has enhanced its productivity and efficiency to maintain its competitiveness.”
“Buyers are turning to us because we are still most competitive supplier. Besides, a pick up in global demands is in sight that helped rise in apparel shipments this year,” he added.
Earnings from readymade garments (RMG) export during the July-April period of this year stood at $ 25.30 billion.
The knitwear export stood at $ 12.54 billion during the period, marking an 11.43 per cent growth during the period of the FY18.
Both woven and knit items exports surpassed the target, set for the period, by 4.23 per cent and 2.12 per cent respectively, the data showed.
Terming the RMG export growth ‘good’, Mohammad Hatem, vice-president of Exporters Association of Bangladesh (EAB), said the export growth in terms of the volume is higher than the value.
“It means that though Bangladesh’s garment exports have increased in quantity, the prices of apparel didn’t go up in line with quantity,” he claimed.
He, however, said that the industry attained the growth due to improved infrastructure and manufacturing sustainability.
