UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Sunday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is trying to hold a ‘state funeral’ of Bangladesh’s independence by signing a defence deal with India during her upcoming visit to the neighbouring country.
“The Prime Minister’s politics, arrogance and authority all are threats to the country’s sovereignty and common people. After obliterating democracy, now she has taken a move to hold a state funeral of Bangladesh’s independence,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press conference, he further said, “There’s a doubt whether the existence of Bangladesh will be found, if the (defence) deal is signed. The country’s people will turn down such a deal with hatred and resist it with all-out efforts.”
The BNP leader questioned the justification of the defence deal with India when Bangladesh Army is quite capable of ensuring the country’s security. “Our army is very strong and valiant, and they’re enough to ensure Bangladesh’s national security.” He alleged that though the country’s people are against the defence deal, the Prime Ministry is moving ahead to sign it ignoring public opinion.
Rizvi also accused the government of using the militancy issue as a tactic to divert people’s attention to a different direction from its move to sign the defence deal. “People now have got a clear idea that the militant activities are being carried out with much enthusiasm as the government is going to sign the defence deal with the neighbouring country.” He alleged that militancy has spread in the country due to the government’s brutal and cruel governing system.
About the recent anti-militancy operations, he said people are in doubt about the drives due to the government’s ‘dramatic’ statements over those. “People could believe the drives had the militants been arrested alive and put on trial.” The BNP leader claimed that law enforcers picked up around 10 people from Jhenidah, Chittagong and Rajshahi over the last two weeks. Referring to human rights bodies’ reports, he said 21 people were killed in crossfire in the last one month. Rizvi alleged that law enforcers picked Chittagong JCD leader Nurul Alam Nuru up and killed him brutally.
