Member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources, Power and Ports Prof Anu Muhammad on Friday alleged that the government itself is destroying the Sundarbans by installing the coal-based power plant at Rampal.
He came up with the allegation while addressing a protest programme arranged by Sorbopran Sangskritik Shakti, a
cultural organisation, at Shahbagh intersection in the city. Although the government urged the global leaders at the climate conference in Morocco to work together to protect the environment, Anu Muhammad said, it itself is destroying environment in the country.
Later, the protesters brought out a rally from the intersection that paraded through the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University. They also announced to hold a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar on November 26 protesting the government’s move to build the power plant in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district.
