People from different walks of life, including teachers, students, politicians and right activists, took to the streets and formed Human chains across the country for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday demanding exemplary punishment for rapists and their patrons.
Meanwhile, massive drives have been launched by the police against the offenders after a huge demonstrations across the country against rape and as several rape incidents took place in the country last two days.
It is learned that at least 15 rape incidents occurred across the country amid ongoing massive protests and demenostrations since Friday to Saturday.
At Jatiya Sangsad, several hundred activists of different organisations, including those working on women’s rights as Feminist across Generation, staged demonstrations on the road in front of the city’s Jatiya Sangsad on Saturday, protesting the growing incidents of rape and demanding the toughest punishment for rapists.
They protested wearing masks and blamed the decay of moral values and the culture of impunity for this social menace called rape.
The protesters were chanting slogans
condemning the ‘impunity of rapists’ and demanding prompt action to bring the rapists to book.
They were holding placards inscribed with: “Stop protecting rapists”, “Mukti chai, Rokkha Noi”.
The demonstrators with general people and leaders and activists from different organisations marched peacefully.
At that time, protesters also demanded the resignation of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for failing to prevent rape incidents across the country.
At Shahbagh, People from of all walks of life gathered in front of the National Museum in the capital’s Shahbagh area to protest against rape.
Earlier on Friday, the protesters announced that they would take to the street every afternoon to protest some recent incidents of rape including the violation of a housewife in Sylhet MC College and the assault of a Noakhali woman last month.
Meanwhile, Badiul Alam Majumder, General Secretary of Citizens for Good Governance (Sujan), said at a human chain in front of the National Museum in the capital, Shahbag, on Saturday the violence against women has become an epidemic like coronavirus in the country.
“The perpetrators of violence against women are active under the ruling party’s political umbrella,” Badiul Alam added.
Sujan also announced a nationwide human chain program demanding stop violence against women, and justice for the perpetrators.
The Law Minister however, on Thursday said they are considering a proposal for bringing an amendment to the relevant law with a provision of death penalty for rapists as the highest punishment instead of life imprisonment.
In Rajshahi, Various organizations of the district have staged massive demonstrations against the rape, violence against women and children.
The organizations held these programs separately from Saturday morning to afternoon at Saheb Bazar Zero Point in the city.
Similar protests were also reported from Noakhali, Bramanbaria and others districts.
Waves of anti-rape demonstrations have arisen across the country after a video footage of five men gang-raping a housewife, stripping her naked and filming the video of the incident in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, went viral on social media recently.
The incident occurred in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila at Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union on September 2.
Earlier, the housewife of Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila was molested by some local miscreants at Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union of the upazila last month and a video of the barbaric incident has gone viral on the internet.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media.
