As part of country wide drive, police continued its anti-narcotics drive in Chattogram’s Akbar Shah area, demolishing shanties set up allegedly by a drug dealer named Monir at Shahid Colony, and asked illegal dwellers to leave within a few days. Law enforcers also detained three individuals for hurting the driver of an excavator during the drive.
Police started the anti-narcotics drive at the slum — on around 10 acres of grabbed land belonging to Bangladesh Railway (BR) – installed by influential people. Around 100 shanties were demolished during the drive.
Deputy Commissioner (West) Faruk Ul Haque of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) said with the help of BR authorities, police conducted the anti-narcotics drive in Shahid Colony.
“Shahid Colony, which was set up on illegally grabbed railway land, is one of the major spots for drug trade,” said DC Faruk, adding that police have also asked the residents of the area to leave the government property.
While visiting the spot, people of the area were seen blocking the street — staging demonstrations against the drive. Some of them also threw stones targeting the driver of the excavator, leaving him injured.
Assistant Commissioner (Double Mooring) Asikur Rahaman of CMP said police detained three of them and sent them to police station.
“Due to the drive, most of the residents willingly left with their belongings,” said the AC. DC Faruk said the drive would continue in the area until the entire government property has been recovered, adding that around 40 additional police personnel were deployed in the area to check for the drug traders.
