Mob beating panic: 6 killed: 50 injured, 81 arrested so far

The mob beating panic continues across the country as seven people, including three women, were killed and 50 other injured across the country in the last two weeks on suspicion of being child kidnappers.
The government has taken stern steps to stop spreading of rumours, which is based on the Padma Bridge construction.
To curb the situation, the government has decided to deploy a total of 6.1 million field-level members of both Ansar and VDP across the country.
However, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, till date six people have been killed, while over ten others injured in the incidents related to mob beating.
He also said, 9 cases have been filed so far, and 81 people arrested across the country in connection with the incidents.
Police Headquarters (PHQs) also issued warning against spreading of rumours centering the Padma Bridge.
The PHQs has increased patrolling and surveillance at educational institutions and raising awareness among teachers, students and parents. It also called for installing CCTV cameras at all educational institutions.
It also asked for holding meetings with public representatives, members of the administration, civil society, and community police to raise awareness among the people on the matter. It said that leaflets and posters should be distributed and announcements be made over loudspeakers.
The incidents of mob beating in several parts of the country have increased, though the Padma Bridge authorities on July 9 issued a warning against the spreading of such rumours that sacrifice of human life is needed at the bridge construction site.
The most tragic incident occurred in the capital’s Badda area as Taslima Begum Renu, 40, a mother of two children, was beaten to death around on Saturday when she went to Uttar Badda Government Primary School to ask about the admission process of her child.
Dr Tahmina, Professor of University of Dhaka and also eminent sociologist, told The New Nation that it is undoubtedly a sign of superstition that has been existing in our society since long. To control this type of propaganda, our media have to play an important role.
Besides, our mobile phone operators can also send text messages to the citizens not to believe such rumours any more.
Over this panic, Major General Kazi Sharif Kaikobad, Director General of Ansar and VDP, said that a total of 6.1 million members of Ansar and VDP (Village Defence Party) will work jointly to control the situation. There is a rumour that human heads are required to build the Padma Bridge.
About the Badda mob beating, Masudur Rahman, Sub-Inspector of Badda Police Station, told the media that we are trying to arrest those involved in the incident.
Another woman aged around 32 succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on July 20, after she was beaten-up by locals in Savar’s Tatuljhora area.
In Keraniganj, an unidentified young man was victim of mob beating on Saturday at Rasulpur village.
In Moulvibazar, an unidentified man aged about 50 was beaten to death by a mob around at a tea estate, said Arifur Rahman, OC of Kamalganj Police Station.
Police rescued him and sent him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.
In Narayanganj, an unidentified man aged around 25 was killed by a mob in Mizmizi area of Siddhirganj on Saturday morning.
Locals told police that he was beaten on suspicion of attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old girl.
In Kushtia, an intellectually challenged mother Hasina Khatun was beaten to death accusing her of being a child kidnapper at Daulatpur Bazar of Kushtia on Monday.
In Netrakona, a youth was beaten to death by a mob after he was found carrying a child’s severed head in a bag in the district town on July18.
