UNB, Gaibandha :
A court here on Tuesday issued a warrant for the arrest of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman in a defamation case filed for his derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Judge of the Sadar Cognisance Court Taskinul Haque issued the arrest warrant in the case filed by district unit president of Bangladesh Chhatra League Tahmidur Rahman Siju.
Siju filed the case with the court on December 28 last. On the day, the court asked the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station to submit a report by January 10 after investigating the incident.
The court came up with the arrest warrant after police submitted the probe report, said court sources.
The case was filed in connection with a speech made by Tarique Rahman at a discussion in London on December 15 when he called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a ‘great Razakar’ and claimed that Bangabandhu’s family had no contribution to the country’s Liberation War.
Earlier, a number of courts across the country, including Dhaka, issued either warrants or summonses against the BNP senior vice-chairman in separate cases filed over his disparaging remarks about Bangabandhu.
