Amid countrywide outrage and concern over sexual abuse against women on vehicles, a girl was gang-raped on a boat by four people in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila
on Wednesday night. The 18-year-old girl is said to be a worker of Pran-RFL Group in Narsingdi. At least two rapists have been detained in this connection. They were identified as Al Amin, 25, and Fahim, 24, police said.
Quoting the victim, Arif Hossein, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Kaliganj Police Station said: “The girl was returning to her house after work. She got into the boat owned by Pran RFL Company along with her co-workers around 8:30pm.”
“The co-workers got down of the boat when they reached to the shore of Shitalakhya River. Then, boatmen Al Amin, and Fahim tied the mouth of the girl with a towel. Later, Al Amin and Fahim accompanied by two other boatmen Faruk and Sharif raped the girl,” the police official said.
Locals caught Faruk and Sharif and handed them over to police and two others have managed to flee, he said. Mostafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC), of Kaliganj Police Station, said that a case has been filed in this connection. “The girl is in police custody now.”
Only a few days ago, the country was outraged by the gang-rape of a woman, belonging to the Garo ethnic community, in a microbus in city.
On April 14, sexual abuse on women during Pahela Baishakh at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University drew widespread outrage and triggered protests everywhere.
