The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has issued ‘flood alert’ for all the administrative districts in the country following a forecast of possible flood this year.
The Meteorological Department earlier forecast that floods may be occurred in 37 districts of the country owing to a possibility of heavy rainfall during monsoon season, which runs in Bangladesh from June to September.
The Ministry issued the alert at meetings with high officials of concerned government agencies and department held at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka last week in presence of Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury and Seceretary Shah Kamal.
As part of the flood preparedness, the ministry high-ups on Tuesday held a meeting with officials of the Bangladesh Army and the Navy asking them for getting ready to face the flood.
“We have sent message to all the district administration alerting them for a possible flood. They have also been asked to take precautionary flood control measures,” a senior official of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry told The New Nation yesterday.
Bangladesh bear the brunt of the floods, with two in April and June, and the third one in August last year. The disaster affected more than eight million people by damaging houses, roads, schools and other infrastructure, destroying crops in the agrarian economy.
“Floods took heavy tool on 22 districts of the country last year. But the number may go up to 37 this year (as per the forecast of the Met Department) causing much
concern,” said the ministry official, adding, ” This has forced us to go for an early preparation to face the possible flood.”
He said the ministry has already allocated necessary relief materials to the district administrations.
The district administrations have been asked to take necessary measures for shelter people to schools, colleges and other educational institutions if flood occurs.
Meanwhile, the district administrations of Netrokona, Mymensingh and Sunamganj have asked the farmers of these areas to cut paddy in their fields in the wake of heavy rainfall with the advent of monsoon season.
Already 88 percent of the crop has already been harvested there, officials said.
The Agricultural Ministry earlier expected bumper yields of paddy in these districts this year.
