Muslims across Bangladesh are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr as the country battles with Covid-19 pandemic. This is the second consecutive year that Muslims are celebrating their largest religious festival under the pandemic with strict lockdown measures in place.
The devotees mostly offered their Eid prayers at mosques throughout the country as advised by the Religious Affairs Ministry, maintaining recommended health guidelines.
Five Eid jamaats (congregations) were held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The first Eid jamaat was held at 7 am while the next four at 8 am, 9am, 10am, and 10:45am respectively.
In her address to the nation on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged all to use masks, wash hands regularly with soap and follow other health protocols to stay safe.
She also urged Muslims to celebrate Eid where they are now. But people in their thousands left capital Dhaka to celebrate the Eid with their near and dear ones in villages although there is a ban on inter-district public transport services due to the worsening Covid-19 situation.
Usually, Muslims offer Eid prayers in congregations at mosques and open spaces (Eidgah), but things have changed since Covid-19 hit the world hard.
Though many people are desperate and reluctant about following health protocols, many are wary of meeting each other on this joyous occasion.
