Shah Alam Nur :
The construction work of the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover project may not be completed within the deadline of December next.
Officials connected with the project apprehend that the flyover will not be completed on its December dateline as only 55 per cent work of the two wings of the 8.25-kilometre-long structure has been completed so far.
“This is my observation that the flyover will not be ready for traffic by December this year as it will take more time to complete the work though we are under heavy pressure from the government,” an official of the project told The New Nation said on Thursday.
He said, “The contractors will fail to meet the latest deadline also as only 55 per cent physical progress had been achieved in the first 30 months.”
Specialist on the subject, Dr Mujibur Rahman, Professor of Civil Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) said the construction work on the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover is likely to be delayed as the construction work is running very slow.
He believes that the flyover will not be completed on December deadline and it may actually take at least another couple of years to be finally completed.
The project is being implemented under three packages-PDMMFP W04 (a stretch of 2.12 km from Satrastha to Ramna via Moghbazar), PDMMFP W06 (2.2 km from Janakantha office at Eskaton to Mouchak via Moghbazar) and PDMMFP W05 (3.93 km from Malibagh Chowdhurypara to Razarbagh and Shantinagar).
The construction of the project started in 2013 though it was originally scheduled to start in 2011.
“I had to wait for one and a half hours to go to Moghbazar from Satrasta which is usually needs 10-minutes,” Rasid Babu of the Mogbazar said.
He said, the present slow progress of work is a hassle to residents, commuters and shop owners.
Asadul Karim of New Eskaton said the situation at Moghbazar is chaotic during rush hours, especially the bad and dug-up roads filled with water throughout the year due to leakages in water pipe and overflowing manholes.
Project Director of the flyover Md Nazmul Hossain, however, said they are now expecting to complete work within December as per schedule.
He also said although the work was supposed to begin in 2011, the work orders for Package 4 (Satrasta-Holy Family Hospital) and Package 5 (Malibagh-Mouchak-Rajarbag) were given in November 2012 while that of Package 6 (Eskaton-Moghbazar-Mouchak) in October 2013.
