Yet another barbaric incident has taken place in the Gopalganj district where the assailants gauged out the eyes of a teenager and chopped his hands for allegedly having a love affair with his cousin.
The fatally injured teenager succumbed to his injuries at the Orthopaedic [Pangu] Hospital in Dhaka early Sunday.
It is not the end! The assailants also chopped limbs of the victim’s father, who is now undergoing treatment in a town hospital in a critical condition.
Two other persons were also severely injured when they went to witness their ferocity.
The ghastly incident took place in the Pathalia village of Sadar Upazila in Gopalganj district on Saturday evening, Contd on page-2 Col-the day after Eid-ul Fitr.
According to sources, Tuhin Mollah, 18, had a love affair with his cousin [daughter of his father’s elder brother], who lives adjacent to their home.
The girl’s father Layek Mollah became furious when he came to know that the two lovers went out on the Eid-ul-Fitr day for romance.
Agitated Layek Mollah and his sons then attacked Tuhin all of a sudden. They gauged out of his eyes and severed his hands and legs.
When the boy’s father Shawkat Akbar Mollah, 50, a retired policeman, along with his relatives Firoj Mollah, 40, and Abdul Kashem Mollah, 16, came to rescue Tuhin from the assailants, they were also attacked.
The boy’s father lost his two hands and two legs in the attack while the other two were seriously injured, the sources said.
The injured were rushed to the Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital. Tuhin and his father were then sent to Orthopaedic (Pangu) Hospital in Dhaka when their condition deteriorated where Tuhin died.
No one has been arrested so far.
“It’s a family feud. The two families had a long-standing dispute over land. The rivalry was intensified due to love affairs between two teenagers of both families. We are trying to nab the attackers,” Md. Jakir Hossain Mollah, Officer in-Charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said.
The OC said, “So far we assume, it was a pre-planned attack. The assailants left the area just after the attack. Other members of their family have also gone into hiding earlier.”
Gopalganj District Superintendent of Police [SP] SM Emran Hossain said the body was handed over to his family after medical examination on Sunday noon.
