Another batch of 136 Bangladeshi nationals, including five women and five children, will return home on Tuesday night.
A special flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines will go to Djibouti and is expected to return to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8pm, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam told reporters on Monday.
They were evacuated from Hodeida, Yemen on April 15 by Indian Naval Ship (INS)-Sumitra and reached Djibouti on April 16. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry arranged their accommodation, food and other logistics during their stay in Djibouti.
He said, the total number of returnees and under Foreign Ministry’s shelter is 508.
Responding to a question, the State Minister said the total number of Bangladesh nationals would not exceed 700-800. “It’s our best possible estimate [that stands] after talking to all relevant sources.”
Earlier, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said the number could be 1500-3000.
Earlier, on Sunday, a total number of 337 Bangladesh nationals, including 14 women and 13 children, who were stranded in Yemen, arrived safe and sound from Kerala, India. Before that 26 more returned home in three groups.
The Foreign Ministry has been conducting repatriation of Bangladeshis stranded in the war-torn Yemen at the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and under the direct supervision of Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali. Fr coordination and monitoring of the whole repatriation process, the Foreign Ministry has set up a ‘Repatriation Control Room’ in Djibouti headed by Bangladesh Ambassador in Kuwait Major General Mohammad Ashab Uddin and a ‘Repatriation Coordination Cell’ in the Foreign Ministry headed by Additional Foreign Secretary Mizanur Rahman.
