A daylong annual conference on “Microbes and Industrial Development: Bangladesh Perspectives” was held on Sunday at the Microbiology Department of Dhaka University.
Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists (BSM) and the Department of Microbiology of Dhaka University (DU) jointly organized the conference.
State Minister for Ministry of Science and Technology Architect Yeafesh Osman inaugurated the conference as the chief guest.
President of BSM Professor Md Nural Anwar presided over the function while DU vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique addressed the function as the special guest. Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Prof Md Imdadul Hoque attended the function as the guest of honour.
Chairperson of the Department of Microbiology of DU Prof Mahmuda Yasmin delivered the welcome speech and General Secretary of BSM Prof Dr M A Malek gave the vote of thanks. The state minister urged the young generation to become science and technology minded to face global competition of the 21st century. He said the socio-economic development of a country is possible only when it achieves scientific and technological advancement. Therefore, the present government has decided to establish “National Science Building” to promote science education and research, he added.
Yeafesh emphasized on building attraction among people about science education and said that the language of science should reach common people effectively.
Prof Arefin in his speech urged the microbiologists to conduct continuous research for ensuring food security in the country.
He said that microbiological education should be utilized properly to increase food production and improve the agricultural system in the country. The DU VC hoped that microbiologists would play an important role to the overall development of the country.
