A supporter of Awami League-supported Dhaka North City Corporation mayor candidate Annisul Huq has been fined for breaching electoral code.
Five other councillor aspirants were also fined on similar grounds.
Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam said Huq’s supporter Anowar Hossain, an engineer, was fined Tk 20,000 and the councillor aspirants Tk 46,000 on Friday.
The law stipulates that candidates cannot start canvassing before they are allocated symbols, after the
deadline to quit the race ends. But Hossain started campaigning for Huq by hanging posters before that.
The magistrate said councillor aspirants Ibrahim Kha, Hasan Molla, Nazrul Islam, Rafiqul Islam and Parveen Hossain had made similar offence.
The ruling Awmai League has endorsed Huq for contesting North’s mayor election and Sayeed Khokon for Dhaka South.
