Anisul Islam Mahmud on Sunday joined the Ministry of Environment and Forests after his transfer from the Water Resources Ministry on January 3, according to an official release.
He was elected Member of Parliament from Chittagong-5 constituency in the 10th parliamentary elections held in 2014. Mahmud took oath as a Cabinet Minister on January 12 in the same year and was awarded the portfolio of the Ministry of Water Resources, the release said.
Born in Chittagong in 1947, Mahmud obtained BA (Honours) in Economics from Dhaka University in 1969 and M.Sc. in Economics from Quaide Azam University in Islamabad, the release added.
The minister received a Commonwealth Scholarship to study at the Essex University, UK, and received an MA in Economics from there in 1972. He was called to the Bar from Lincolns Inn, London, UK in 1975.
Mahmud served as a Lecturer of Economics at Dhaka University from 1969 to 1970.
He was also a Lecturer of Economics at the Hertfordshire University (UK) from 1973 to 1977 and a Senior Research Associate in the Economics Department at the East Anglia University in the UK from 1972 to 1973.
