James Anderson has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match.” This is Anderson’s first offence since the revised code involving demerit points was introduced in September 2016.
The incident occurred in the 29th over of India’s innings yesterday, when a loud LBW shout against Virat Kohli was turned down by Kumar Dharmasena. Anderson, the bowler, “snatched his cap and jumper from umpire” and then spoke to him in an “aggressive maner,” the match referee Andy Pycroft observed. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Joel Wilson, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Tim Robinson. Since Anderson has admitted to the offence, no formal hearing is needed.
