UNB, Dhaka :
Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman said Tuesday that children are not properly brought up due to lack of due attention and care of guardians.
He said this while attending a programme (as chief guest) marking the 26th founding anniversary of ‘Amra Kuri’, a national organisation for children and teenagers at Jatiya Sangeet O Nrityakala Kendra Auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
A discussion meeting together with honoring the personalities, prize giving ceremony and cultural show was organized as part of the programme.
Mostafizur said “Drugs destroy both the youth and the children. It is a great contagion. If we can not inform our children right now about the bad effect, it will affect in the near future. The guardians are forcing their children into any thing. So this affects their natural mental growth.”
Mentioning the government’s regular monitoring, the minister said “We are very strict to protect our students from physical torture by the teachers. But guardians are torturing their children for the result.”
Thanking all organizers and guests, Special Guest Amanullah Khan, chairman of United News of Bangladesh (UNB) and chief advisor of ‘Amra Kuri’, said “We should teach our children about the good activities from very childhood so that they can learn and practice the good lesson in the whole life.”
Referring to a story learned from a renowned personality, he said “Sweden is a very developed country. Their school teachers taught their students to switch off their lights and fans about the consumption of the power from very childhood. We have very limited resources. If we want to use our limited resources properly, we should teach our children not to waste the resources without reason.”
“We should prepare our children from their childhood to ensure the green world. It will impossible to build sustainable world without making green world.”
He said “I am very much happy and proud to be engaged with the organization. I am honored to attend many programmes of the organisation. Its activities are going very smoothly without any Government or Non-Government donation. I do not know whether any other child organization has been working so sincerely for a long time for the welfare of the children.”
He said that the organization is not only working for the practice of culture but also it is conducting some awareness and educational programes for the children. Among them, sex and HIV/AIDS awareness which was previously taboo. Discussing on this issue, Khan said they had to face a lot of criticism. But this issue today is being discussed and included in the text books.
He added they also had conducted programmes on giving up smoking, building the relationship between the children and mother, inclusion of the marginalized children into mainstream and making friends with them, protection from the natural disasters, building life skills, etc.
Amanullah Khan said “We have worked on the rights of children too. We have also observed the children day. There are many laws in our country to protect them. Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 (amended 2013) is one of them. This remarkable act has introduced the tribunal and speedy trial court for the women only, but it has unluckily not introduced tribunal and speedy trial court for the children. I requested to the minister to take the possible measure to include it for ensuring the justice against the oppression of the children.”
Talking on the Child Marriage Restraint Act 2016, Amanullah Khan said child marriage has been illegal in Bangladesh since the adoption of the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929. The government has passed a controversial law allowing marriages of underage girls and boys in ‘special cases’, ignoring repeated calls of the rights groups. “I think this term should be removed from the act to end the child marriage,” he said.
“We have law and policy. These work as safeguards. We have a big gap in the implementation of the law and policy. Sometimes, laws are violated. Law alone cannot stop it. Government should take the zero tolerance policy. The criminal should be arrested in the meantime of the oppression.”
The cultural programme featured solo dance, chorus dance, and chorus song while some personalities who contributed to children’s development were honoured.
Chairman of the organization Mustak Ahmed Liton, Secretary General Ferdous Ara, Singer Meherin delivered their speech while Dr Sheikh Salahuddin Ahmed, advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court and prime sponsor of ‘Amra Kuri’ presided over the meeting.
