Double Olympic and four-time world triple jump champion Christian Taylor is set to miss the Tokyo Games after rupturing his Achilles tendon.
The 30-year-old’s fiancee, Austrian Olympic hurdler Beate Schrott, posted the news on her Instagram feed.
The American suffered the injury at Wednesday’s Golden Spike competition in the Czech Republic.
His coach Rana Reider said Taylor underwent surgery in Germany on Thursday, which “went well”.
“It was his right Achilles and a complete rupture,” Reider said. “It was a clean break and a clean surgery.
“They were able to repair it. He was pretty happy with it [the way the surgery went].”
Asked if he thought Taylor would be back this year, Reider said: “I don’t think so.”
In the social media post announcing her fiancee’s injury, Schrott said “it’s heart-breaking”.
“I know he’ll get through this,” she continued. “He will fight his way back.”
The US athletics federation wished Taylor a speedy recovery.
The Tokyo Olympic Games are due to start on 23 July after being delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
