The country’s existing law and denotation shortage of organs are main obstacle for kidney transplantation in Bangladesh although a kidney transplant also provides a better quality of life than dialysis, speakers said at the opening session of the two-day Gonoshasthaya Kendra International Nephrology Conference-2019 organised by Gonoshasthaya Kendra at Dhanmondi in the city on Friday with the theme ‘Quality Renal Care with Affordable Cost’.
Prof Brig Gen (retd) Mamun Mostafi, Chairman of the conference organizing committee presided over the inaugural session where Prof Matiur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh Renal Association was present as chief guest. Prof Quazi Deen Mohammad, President, Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons, Prof. Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, former Health Advisor to PM were present as special guests and Prof Vivekanand Jha, President of the International Society of Nephrology was present as guest of honour on the occasion.
Speaking as the chief guest, Prof Matiur Rahman said, “It is necessary to make a list of dialysis patient at national level and do kidney transplant of priority basis.” Considering the international law, he also emphasized on amendment of provision of the Transplantation of Human Organs (amendment) Act 2018.
Four distinguished doctors, Dr. Syed Anwarul Hafiz, Professor of Emeritus, Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurul Amin, ENT specialist, Prof. Dr. Rabiul Husain, Eye specialist, Prof. Dr. Md. Rafiqul Alam, Nephrologist were awarded Gonoshasthaya Kendra Gold Medal for their outstanding contribution in medical service at the inaugural session.
Around 200 nephrologists from home and abroad, biomedical engineers and nurses took part at the conference. On the first day of the conference researchers and physicians from abroad and home presented papers at the symposium. Throughout the two-day conference, delegates will receive academic and hands on training by workshop to introduce modern treatment facilities at an affordable cost to people from walks of life.
