Amassing wealth, former Savar mayor imprisoned

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced Md Dewan Nazimuddin, former mayor of Savar municipality, to imprisonment of four years in a case filed for amassing wealth worth Tk 29.18 lakh illegally.
Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of the Special Judge’s Court-9 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict.
The court also fined Nazim Tk 29,18,844, which will be realised from his property. Following the verdict, the court cancelled his bail and sent him to Dhaka Central Jail of Keraniganj with conviction warrant, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Special Public Prosecutor Rezaul Karim confirmed the media.
 The court also fined Nazim Tk 1,00,000 for concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC, in default he will have to suffer three months more in prison.
According to the prosecution, it was alleged that Nazim during his tenure amassed wealth worth Tk 29.18 lakh illegally and concealed wealth information in the statement he submitted to the ACC.
After an enquiry, ACC Assistant Director Monirul Islam filed the case against Nazim with its Dhaka Integrated District Office.
On January 23, 2020, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against accused Nazim.
