The International Mother Language Day was observed in the city as elsewhere in the district with due respect and solemnity on Saturday .
Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar turned into human sea shortly after zero hours with the presence of thousands of people from different walks of life.
Leaders of different political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations and people from all walks of life from child to adults gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to show honour to the martyred language heroes and placed wreaths one after another at the Shaheed Minar with discipline and due respect on bare foots at 12.01 am on Friday night.
Police and district administration sources said traditional Ekushey programmes beginning from midnight including placing of wreaths at the Shaheed Minar passed peacefully.
To mark the day, different political, professional and socio- cultural
organisations held daylong programmes including discussion meeting, Milad Mahfil, Poetry recitation, arts competition for children and cultural functions in the city.
A smart contingent of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) paid guard of honour at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12.01.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, MP, was the first to place the wreath at the Shaheed Minar.
He was followed by the state minister for land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed and Chittagong City mayor M Manzur Alam, Mahjabin Morshed, MP, Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Abdullah, DIG Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Mezbah Uddin, Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority Abdus Salam, District Administrator MA Salam and former mayor and president of Chittagong city Awami League (AL) ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Besides, different political parties including AL Chittagong city, North and South AL district units, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) placed flower wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
In the morning students from different educational institutions and socio- cultural organisations carrying different colourful banners, festoons and play cards placed floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
Vice chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Prof Anwarul Azim paid tributes to the language martyred by placing wreaths at CU Shaheed Minar while VC of Chittagong University of Engineering and technology (CUET) Prof Dr M Jahangir Alam placed wreaths at CUET Shaheed Minar in the morning.
Besides, different educational institutions and socio-cultural organisations chalked out separate programmes to mark the day.
The programmes included illuminations of different road islands and roundabouts with the festoons inscribed with Bengali alphabets, placing wreaths at the altar of the Central Shaheed Minar at zero hours of February 21, hoisting of the national flags half mast on all public offices,handwriting, drawing and patriotic songs competitions of children, Milad and Doa Mahfil seeking salvation of the Language Martyred.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) on the occasion of immortal Ekhushey
accorded Ekhushey Memorial Award to 16 eminent individuals including three journalists at city’s Muslim Institute Hall today.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was present at the award giving ceremony as the chief guest.
