Impact of cyclone "˜Bulbul': Aman seed production hampered in Barishal

Production of Aman paddy seeds is being hampered severely at seed production firm of the government, due to affect of recently blown severe cyclone `Bulbul’.
The only seeds production firm in Barishal district may be failed to achieve target of Aman seeds production due to that, confirmed Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) officials. During the cyclone Bulbul, seed production on portions of Aman paddy fields damaged and some areas Aman paddy blossoms fell down.
Besides some portions of Aman paddy cultivation partially affected as water flooded the field and as a result we would not be able to achieve our Aman seed production target, said Kishor Kumar Biswas, assistant director of Lakutia Seeds Production Firm, Barishal.
In this firm we targeted Aman seed production of 53 metric tons for 2018-2019 session, but production may be decreased at least 10 percent due to affect of cyclone `Bulbul’.
We targeted production of seeds BRRI-22 (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute/BRRI) as 7.5 metric ton, BRRI-23 and 76 as 18 and 23 metric tons and BRRI-52 as 4.5 metric tons.
But we could get only 48 metric tons of Aman seeds out of our targeted seed cultivations on 53 metric tons, he added.
Generally our listed farmers using seeds supplied by us grow more seeds to produce and supply seeds and we from listed farmers collecting those seeds sent to market for general cultivation. But this seed production chain may be hampered due to affect of Bulbul, the LSPF official explained.
Profulla Mahajan, farmer of Goila village under Agailjhara Upazila of the district, said we cultivated one acre of land for storing Aman seeds, but most of the paddy got rotten after flooded by water due to cyclone Bulbul. Aman seedbeds damaged severely by one-week-long downpour at Harta village in Wajirpur upazila of the district, another farmer Abdullah added.
Md. Aftabuddin, additional director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Barishal office, said Aman cultivation being hampered due to affect of `Bulbul’ and production may be decreased six to eight percent.
At least cultivation of Aman paddy on 9900 hectors out of 1, 24,633 hectors, partly damaged and production may be decreased 7 to 10 percent, he added.
Trespassers evicted from PWD lands
A mobile court led by Russell Iqbal, Administrative Magistrate of Barishal district administration, evicted illegal occupants from 120 establishments including 12 residential, 3 political offices, 103 shops, 1 saw-mill, 1 fish market from the land owned by Public Works Department (PWD) to afternoon in Taltali area under Charbaria union of Barishal city skirt recently.
Oliver Guda, executive engineer of PWD regional office, said PWD acquired 9.16 acres of lands more than three decades ago for public interest.
The lands were used as brick fields of PWD, but later it was illegally occupied by different socio-political influential.
To evict the illegal occupants, eviction notices were given in 2015 against enlisted 58 persons and establishments.
Some of the illegal occupants willingly removing their establishments vacant their occupied spaces, but others ignored those notices, were evicted by the district administration in presence of law enforcing agencies led by Moktar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Barishal Metropolitan Police, sources said.
