Harvesting of early variety Aman paddy BRRI Dhan-62, and Bina Dhan-7 has begun in the district.
Sources with the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the early variety of the crop is now becoming ready for harvesting with the late variety Aman plants in full bloom predicting an excellent production during the current season.
DAE Deputy Director Shovan Kumar Dhar said so far 10 to 12 percent Aman paddy has already been harvested in the district with the output ranging between 3.5 and 4 metric tonnes per hectare.
The sources said farmers of the district cultivated Aman paddy on 41,250 hectares in the current season against the target of 39,400 hectares fixed by the DAE in the current season.
He said Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) supplied quality seeds to the farmers at fair prices to felicitate the Aman paddy cultivation.
BSS from Gaibandha adds: Harvest of transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy has been progressing in seven upazilas of the district. Sources with Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the department set a target of bringing 1,19,649 hectares of land under T-Aman paddy cultivation this year with an estimated yield of 3,14,712 tonnes of rice. Taking advantage of favorable climatic condition, farmers of the district this time ultivated the crop on 1,25,630 hectares, up by 5981 hectares against the target.
To make the cultivation programme a grand success, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) timely distributed high quality Aman seeds to the farmers at fair prices.
Besides, different state run commercial banks, including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, disbursed agri loans on easy terms to the poor and marginalfarmers to help them cultivate the crop, the sources said.
DAE Director AKM Ruhul Amin said about 24 percent harvest of the paddy has already been completed till November 26.
