Rangpur Correspondent :
Farmers in Rangpur district are worried as Aman cultivation is seriously being hindered in the district owing to dearth of water and scanty rainfall during the current season.
Cultivation of Aman paddy generally does not require any irrigation. But this year many farmers in the district are watering their fields with electric or diesel-run pumps for the purpose as the rainfall is scarce
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur sources, the department has set a target to bring a total of 2,51,067 hectares of land under Aman cultivation in the district this year.
But the farmers are apprehensive of achieving the target as a drought like situation has been prevailing in the region for long as a result of which Aman output may face setback. Small rivers beels, canals, pond and other water bodies of the district dried up hampering the irrigation process making the farmers doubtful about achieving Aman target this season.
DAE sources said, the Bangla month Ashar and Shrabon are the peak season for transplanting Aman seedling. But this year rainfall was very meager during Ashar and Shrabon as a result farmer have been facing serious problem in irrigating their lands.
Azizur Rahman, a farmer of Chikli Chowdhurypara village under Taraganj upazila said that he has set a target to cultivate Aman on 3 bighas of land this season but so far he could cultivate only one and half bigha due to scarcity of water.
Deputy Director of DAE, Rangpur Firoz Ahmed said that Aman cultivation is facing difficulties in the district due to lack of adequate rainfall. DAE has already taken initiative to motivate farmers for irrigating their lands
