Bangladesh National Awami Party (Bangladesh NAP), a partner of the BNP-led alliance, has protested the government’s initiative to provide power corridor to India. The party has said that the initiative of the Bangladesh government is a ‘self-suicidal move’.
The party leaders protested and expressed the view at a human chain, formed in front of the National Press Club in the city on Friday. They also demanded proper sharing of the Teesta
water and urged the Bangladesh government to take initiative of abandoning intra-river linking projects in India, which will have negative impacts on the both countries.
The party Chairman Jebel Rahman Ghaani, its Secretary General M Golam Mustafa Bhuiyan, MM Aminur Rahman of Bangladesh Kalyan Party, Khokon Chandra Das of Democratic League, NAP leaders Alhajj Golam Sarwar Khan, Principal Benajir Ahmed, Swapan Kumar Saha, Md Kamal Bhuiyan, Md Shamim Bhuiyan and other leaders addressed the programme.
Criticising the government for giving the power corridor, Jebel Rahman Ghaani said, there are several unsettled issues between Bangladesh and India, including the Farakka Barrage, the Tipaimukh Dam, sharing of Teesta water and the border killing. The government has failed to settle the issues although these are more significant. Now the government is giving the power corridor without settling the issues. It is unexpected, he said. He urged the government to review the decision
The speakers said that the power corridor to India would destroy thousands of acres of cultivable lands and cause doom to many Bangladeshi farmers.
