UNB, Khulna :
Distribution of the government allowances to 85 freedom fighters in different parts of the district has been kept suspended for several reasons.
Liberation War Affairs Ministry has halted providing allowances to the 85 people from January this year on several grounds, including unavailability of their names in the Muktibarta (red book), two freedom fighters’ holding the same number in the gazette and absence of some people from the committee formed to scrutinise and re-examine the freedom fighter status.
Social Welfare Department sources said Abul Kamal Azad, organising secretary of the Khulna unit of Sector Commanders’ Forum, Advocate Abul Hossain Hawladar, Swapan Kumar Das, Golam Mostafa, Majibur Rahman Tara, Abdus Sobhan Khan, late Monoranjan Haldar, son of Sonadanga area, Sheikh Hafizullah, Abdul Goni Hawladar, Abdur Rab, Kazi Aminul Islam, Sheikh Mahiuddin of Khalishpur area, Khorshed Alam Bir Prtik and Nazrul Islam were among those whose allowances were suspended.
Besides, the allowances of eight people each in Rupsha, Digholia and Dumuria upazilas were suspended in a row while three in Phultala upazila, 11 in Batiaghata upazila, two in Koyra and 33 in Terokhada upazila met the same fate.
However, Liberation War Affairs Ministry sources said SCF leader Abul Kamal Azad received his allowance from July 2013 to December 2015.
Sheikh Abdul Hamid, deputy director of Social Welfare Department, said after corrections, papers of the freedom fighters whose allowances were suspended were sent to the ministry concerned and the allowances will be given after receiving the directive from the ministry.
Sardar Mahbubur Rahman, district commander of Muktijoddha Sangsad, said they have sent some papers to the ministry following recommendation of the committee for scrutiny.
Abu Zafar, former district commander, alleged that among the 85 people, Abdul Goni Hawladar, Golam Mostafa and Swapan Kumar Das had not taken part in the Liberation Ward.
Besides, the names of Anwar Hossain Gazi and Abul Kalam Azad in Koyra upazila were found in the gazette no 3941 and due to the faulty names allowances of both were suspended, he said.
Contacted, Abul Kamal Azad said the ministry concerned had issued notification on his name and he took part in the Liberation War in Pirojpur.
The deputy commissioner of Pirojpur district has sent documents to the ministry after correcting those, he added.
