A suspected robber and an alleged terrorist were killed in separate incidents of ‘gunfight’ with the law enforcers in Jessore and Chapainawabganj districts early Wednesday.
In Jessore, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Rahmatpur on the Jessore-Jhenaidah highway in Sadar upazila of Jessore early Wednesday.
Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Assistant sub-inspector of Jessore Detective Branch (DB) of police Abul Khayer said tipped off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery on the highway, a team of
police conducted a drive there around 2:45 am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, the unidentified robber was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene. Three policemen were also injured in the incident.
They are Sub-inspector Tofael Ahmed and constables Sirajul Islam and Abu Rasel.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police also recovered one pistol and one sharp weapon from the spot. In Chapainawabganj, alleged terrorist Milon, son of Abdus Salam, a resident of Ramchandrapur area in Sadar upazila, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Chakalampur in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
Squadron Leader Mobashwer Rahim, commanding officer of RAB-5, said on a tip-off that a gang of terrorists, including Milon, was staying in the area, a team of the elite force launched a drive there at about 2:30 am.
Sensing the presence of RAB members, Milon and his cohorts opened fire at them, prompting the elite force to retaliate with gunshots.
Milon received bullets and died on the spot while his aides managed to get away. Later, the elite force recovered the body and sent it to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
RAB members also recovered one pistol, one revolver, six rounds of bullet and four crude bombs from the spot.
Milon was accused in eight cases, the commander added.
