An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Amishapara of Sonaimuri upazila in the district early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ratan Mia, 32, son of Rahamat Ullah of Mahtabpur village and an accused in 13 cases including that of murder, drugs and robbery.
After arresting Ratan on Saturday afternoon police conducted a drive to recover arms along with him at night in Podipara village, said officer-in-charge of Sonaimuri Police Station Abdus Samad.
When they reached the village the accomplices of Ratan fired gunshots on
police, forcing them to fire back in self-defese, leaving Ratan bullet wounded, the OC said.
Ratan succumbed to his injuries when he was taken to the Sadar Hospital.
Police also recovered a locally made firearm, four rounds of bullets, two empty shells of cartridges and 31 Yaba pills from the spot.
