The BNP on Thursday urged every quarter to stand united for restoration of democracy. The party also announced fresh programme for three days to continue peaceful movement for release of Begum Khaleda Zia.
The party will start a mass signature campaign on February 17, and will submit memorandum to the deputy commissioners the next day. The party will also hold protest rally in all the district headquarters and other metropolitan cities except Dhaka on February 20.
BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office a day after the three-day countrywide second-phase protests that ended on Wednesday through the hunger strike.
The BNP Secretary-General said that they want to hold a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital later and hoped the government would give them permission for it.
Mirza Fakhrul said, the government is hindering our peaceful programme.
“We are observing every programme peacefully but the government is obstructing. On Wednesday, the government asked us to end our scheduled token hunger three hours before time,” Fakhrul said.
He also said, “As we want peace, we finished the programme by 1pm. Yet, the police detained several activists from the peaceful programme.”
BNP Secretary General said, “The government has terrorized the society in the name of law and order situation. They want to make BNP empty of leadership.”
“The government is devastating the democracy from the country. We urge all the political parties, every organisation, institutions and all democratic forces to stand united to restorations of democracy,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
