Sylhet city has worn a festive look with people rushing to local markets for purchasing colourful clothes and goods to welcome the ‘Pahela Baishakh,’ the first day of Bangla New Year-1426 today.
District Administration, Sylhet City Corporation, Shilpokola Academy, government departments, Sommilito Sangskritik Jote, dozens of socio-cultura and literary and other organisations and educational institutions has decorated the Sylhet city colorfully.
Different markets, shops and shopping malls were overcrowded making the salespersons extremely busy in selling ‘Baishakhi’ clothes and other items on the weekly holiday today only a day left before the celebration of the traditional festivity.Sellers and traders said many young girls, adolescents, students, housewives and men are thronging roadside shops, markets and shopping malls to purchase ‘Baisahkhi’ goods.
The people are mostly purchasing ‘Baishakhi’ clothes like red-bordered white and yellow ‘saree’, coloured ‘punjabi and shirts, bangles, ‘punthi necklace’, bands, shoes, cosmetics and other items to beautify themselves to welcome the ‘Pahela Baishakh’.
Students of LU Pollob Roy said they purchased red-bordered white and yellow sarees, red-coloured glass bangles, ‘punthi necklace’, flower bands and other colourful clothes.”Wearing of colourful ‘Baishakhi saree, ‘punthi necklace’ and flower bands at hair bun, eating ‘Pantha Bhat’ with ‘Pat Sak’, ‘Shutki’ and spicy ‘Aloo Bhorta’ adds extra pleasure to ‘Baishakhi’ celebrations,” said university student Jui.
Housewives Kolpona Begum, said they purchased Baishakhi clothes, for their husbands, sons, daughters, sisters and other family members despite higher prices of every item this year.
Trader Muktar Hossain said he was very happy to sell huge glass bangles, ‘punthi necklace’ and many other Baishakhi items to the thronging women, girls, adolescents and men as the sales reached at the peak today. Salesman Mohan said he was selling each dozen of red-coloured ‘Reshmi bangles’ at Taka 90 to 130, ‘Dhamaka set metal bangles’ at Taka 130 to 160, ‘Mou bangles’ at Taka 200 to 300 and red-coloured metal bangles at Taka 250 to 350.
Bangle Trader Islam Uddin at City Super Market said young ladies, girls, adolescents and housewives were purchasing glass bangles as well as ‘punti necklace’ and other goods from his shop today.”Ornament sets with soil-works are being sold at Taka 100 per set, three-layer red-white mixed coloured bangles at Taka 250 per dozen, back stone bangles at Taka 350, smaller red-coloured ‘punti’ necklace at Taka 200, two-step red coloured ‘punti’ necklace at Taka 350, red rose band at Taka 130, antique set band at Tk 1,500 to 2,200,” he said.
Another trader Ali Hossain at Al Hamra Shopping City said girls are mostly purchasing ‘Dul’ of ear, bracelets, ‘Jorry’ and bags along with bangles, ‘punti’ necklace and hair bands to decorate them more magnificently to welcome ‘Pahela Baishak.
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year-1426, will be celebrated in the city and its adjacent areas tomorrow with a festive mood and enthusiasm like other parts of the country.
Local administration, Rajshahi City Corporation, educational institutions, political parties and various other social and cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes marking the celebration.
Programmes of the day will be heralded in the city amid a “Mongol Shobayatra” on Collegiate School premises. Rajshahi district administration will arrange the colourful rally.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) will host a daylong celebration programmes.
Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton will participate in most of the programmes. Cultural groups and different organisations including Sammilita Sangskritik Jote will arrange various programmes like musical functions, colourful marches and street side Baishakhi fairs in the city. They will bring out Baishakhi processions in the city streets.
Baishakhi Melas, cultural functions, staging of dramas, doll-dances, Nagor Dola, kite flying competitions and discussions meeting will also be held.
Various educational institutions including Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi College and Rajshahi Medical College have set various programmes to celebrate the festival.
Faculty of Fine Arts in Rajshahi University along with university administrative officials, are scheduled to bring out a colorful rally titled Mongol procession around 9:30am in front of the faculty building.
They have also chalked out a three day-long programmes of folk songs gambhira dance, band music and jatra pala at the university Charu Chattar to celebrate Pahela Baishakh of the Bengali New Year-1426.
BSS from Rangpur reports: The District and Upazilas Administrations have completed preparations to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh’, the first day of Bengali New Year-1426, with traditional festivities in Rangpur division today.
Rangpur city, other seven district towns and 58 upazila headquarters in the division have worn colourful looks to celebrate the traditional ‘Pahela Baishakh’ festivities peacefully amid tight security measures before the sunset.
Business community leaders said celebration of ‘Chaitra Sangkranti’, the last day of the outgoing year, began today in hats, bazars, groceries and important places in the division with traditional ‘Halkhata’ for renewal of business accounts clearing dues.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangpur Enamul Habib said the district
administration, City Corporation, educational institutions and other organisations will welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh’ with traditional festivities and fanfare in the city.
Besides, government departments, non-governmental, socio-cultural, professional, business and other organisations and private bodies have also taken programmes to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the Bengali Nation.
The celebrations will begin at 6:30am with traditional “Baishakhi” programmes to be performed simultaneously by artists of Shishu Academy and Shilpokola Academy on Banyan Tree premises and Sommilito Sangskritik Jyote on Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city.
At 9 am, the district administration will bring out the colourful ‘Baishakhi’ procession of ‘Mongal Shobhajatra’ carrying festoons, placards, banners and singing ‘Baishakhi’ and folk songs from Zila School ground to welcome the Bengali New Year-1426.
The procession will again return to Zila School ground after parading the ain city streets via Shaheed Sangku Smarani, Zahaj Company Crossing and Betpotti areas in the city.
Thousands of people of all ages, wearing traditional dresses and carrying estoons, placards, banners and singing ‘Esho Hey Baishakh, Esho Esho’ will participate in the ‘Mongal Shobhajatra’ to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh.’
The traditional ‘Baishakhi Mela’, cultural functions, staging dramas,doll-dances, ‘Nagor Dola’, ‘Ha-Du-Du’, ‘Kabadi’, traditional ‘Lathi Khela’, kite flying competitions and discussions will be arranged to welcome the vent.
“The authorities concerned will serve improved traditional Bengali diets to the inmates of all hospitals, Rangpur Central Jail, orphanages, shishuparibars, vagabond centres and orphanages in the district,” Habib said.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police, District Police, RAB-13 and other law enforcement agencies will ensure leak-proof security during celebrations of the ‘Baishakhi’ programmes those will complete before the sunset, he added.
Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin said similar programmes have been chalked out to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh’ with traditional festivities in Kurigram district today.
