All set to celebrate Pahela Baishakh

An enthusiastic mood has been prevailing before welcoming ‘Pahela Baishakh’, the Bengali New Year 1424, everywhere in Rangpur division amid traditional festivities today.
The district towns and important places have worn festive looks and law enforcement agencies taken tight security measures to ensure peaceful celebrations of the traditional ‘Pahela Baishakh’ festivities.
The district and upazila administrations, authorities of different municipalities, Rangpur City Corporation and other organisations have completed preparations to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh’ in all eight districts in the division.
The government, non-government, socio-cultural, professional, business and other organisations, NGOs, private bodies and educational institutions have also taken preparations to celebrate the occasion.
Celebration of the ‘Chaitra Sangkranti’, the last day of the outgoing year, already began today in the hats, bazars, groceries, sales centers and important places through traditional ‘Halkhata’ for renewal of business accounts clearing dues.
According to the district administration sources, colourful programmes have been chalked out to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh’ with traditional festivities of the Bangalees.
In Rangpur city, the celebrations will begin with traditional ‘Baishakhi’ programmes of Shishu Academy, Shilpokola Academy and Zila School at Banyan Tree premises in Zila School and ‘Sommilito Sangskriti Jote’ on Central Shaheed Minar premises.
Later, the district administration in association with a dozens of other organisations will bring out the main ‘Baishakhi’ procession in the city streets from Zila School ground at 9 am to welcome the Bengali New Year.
Thousands of people of all ages will take part in the procession carrying festoons, placards and banners and singing Baishakhi songs, ‘Polli Geeti’, ‘Jarigan’, ‘Bhatiali’, ‘Baul’, ‘Lalon Geeti’, ‘Nazrul Geeti’ and ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ and folk songs.
Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hassan Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General of Police Khondker Golam Faruk, Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Deputy Commissioner, Police Super, will take part in the main procession, among others.
Improved diets will be served to inmates of the hospitals, Rangpur Central Jail, orphanages, ‘Shishu Paribars’, vagabond centres and orphanages in the district.
Traditional ‘Baishakhi’ Melas, cultural functions, staging dramas, puppet shows, ‘Nagor Dola’, ‘Ha-Du-Du’, kite flying competitions, sports competitions for women and discussions will be held.
Similar programmes have been taken everywhere in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari and Gaibandha districts under Rangpur division to welcome ‘Pahela Baishakh.’
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), divisional and district administrations and different educational and socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1424, in a befitting manner in the city Friday.
The concerned authorities have taken tight security measures to ensure law and order for peaceful celebrations of the day with the spirit of War of Liberation and the rich cultural heritage of the Bengalees. The district and upazila administrations and other organizations have adopted separate programmes to celebrate the day.
RCC has adopted a two-day programmre to say goodbye to 1423 and welcome the new Bengali year 1424 at Fudkipara open stage.
The RCC authority is scheduled to open the programme at 7.00 am on April 14.
The district administration has taken a daylong Barshabaran programme, which include a colourful procession, a cultural function at Shishu Academy open stage and serving panta bhat (soaked rice) at the Circuit House.
Baishakhi processions will parade different roads with the participants carrying colourful festoons, placards and banners, masks and singing Boishakhi songs. Businessmen in haats-bazars (market places), groceries, sales centers and important places in both rural and urban areas are taking preparations to organize traditional Halkhata (opening new tally books) and to distribute sweets among their customers.
Baishakhi Melas (fairs), cultural functions, staging dramas, puppet shows, Nagor Dola, kite flying competitions and discussions meeting on Pahela Baishakh will also be held in the city and upazila towns to welcome the Bengali New Year 1424.
Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi College, Rajshahi Medical College and other educational institute have chalked out separate Baishakhi programmes.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) has adopted an all-out security measures to make the festival and all the events safe and uninterrupted.
BSS from Gaibandha adds: All necessary preparations have been completed to welcome the Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bengali New Year-1424, tomorrow with much enthusiasm and traditional festivities as elsewhere in the country.
To mark the day in a befitting manner, the district and upazila administrations, different educational and socio-cultural organizations have chalked out elaborate programmes separately.
The programmes include gathering, bringing out ‘Mongol Shobhajatra’ in the morning, eating of panta vaat with fried hilsha fish and chili, distributing improved diets to the inmates of jails and orphanages ( Shishu Paribars).
The programmes also include art and essay writing competition, holding Boishakhi mela at Independence Square, discussion meeting, cultural function, staging dramas and puppet shows and prizes distribution.

Recently a preparatory meeting to this effect was held in the conference room of District Collectorate Building here with Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad in the chair.
District level officials, leaders of different socio-cultural organizations, cultural personalities, social workers and political leaders including journalists of the print and electronic media took part in the meeting.
