Staff Reporter :
Allegation has been raised against Assistant Sub-Inspector of Dakkhin Khan Police Station Joynal Abedin for shooting and injuring a businessman in the city for extortion during the blockade hours on Monday morning.
The victim was identified as Fayez Ali, 52, a resident of No-13 Madhya Azampur and also owner of a rod and cement trading shop MS Nipu Enterprise at Ayub Market in Azampur of Uttara.
Son of the victim Rahadul Islam alleged that ASI Joynal shot at his father in front of Munshi Market at Azampur apparently without any reason.
According to a victim’s relative Nurul Hasan, the incident took place at about 8: 30am. ASI Joynal tried to take Fayez forcibly when he was talking with some other people in front of his house. When he asked the reason of this, the police official shot him in the waist.
Hearing the sound of gunfire, the locals rushed to the spot. At that time ASI Joynal fled away pointing a pistol to the people.
Locals rushed the bullet injured Hafez to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at about 11.00am. Doctors said that a bullet passed through the right side of his waist. On the other hand, the police claimed that Fayez was a supporter of BNP. They conducted a raid at Azampur area getting specific complains against Fayez. At one stage, he [Fayez] tried to snatch away the pistol of the police officer.
When contacted, Officer-in Charge of Dakkhin Khan Police Station Shamim-ar Rashid Talukdar told The New Nation last night over telephone, “A team of police went to Azampur area getting information about sabotage activities on the rail tracks. A group of 10-12 pickets started brick bating on the police when they reached there.”
He went on, “At that time Fayez tried to snatch away firearms of the police personnel. Police caught Fayez red-handed. A bullet from the pistol hit Fayez when he was scuffling with policemen.”
The OC also said that they were taking preparations to file case against the blockaders including Fayez, for attacking police.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised why ASI Joynal fled away riding a motorbike when local people rushed to the spot. Why did not police arrest him instantly for snatching away the pistol?
There is widespread speculation that the said police official shot and injured the businessman being refused to get extortion money from him.
