Police and other concerned agencies have launched an extensive investigation to unearth the motive behind the sensational silent killing in Narayanganj where five members of a family, including two children, were brutally killed by unknown assailants.
The Crime Scene Unit of Criminal Investigation Department [CID] and local police station prepared ‘surathal’ report of all bodies and collected evidences from the spot. Police suspected that there could be more than three people involved in the murder.
At the same time, the investigators are also examining whether any of the victims was raped as all of them were supposedly given sedatives before killing.
Police recovered five bodies from the ground floor of a five-storey house in the city’s Baburail area in Narayanganj on Saturday night. The victims were identified as Taslima, 35, her son Shanto, 10, her daughter Sumaiya, 5, brother Morshedul, 22, and sister-in-law Lamia, 25.
Husband of slain Taslima, Mohammad Shahfiqul, filed a murder case with Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on Sunday, Officer-in-Charge [investigation] Mohammad Shahjalal said.
Meanwhile, the police have detained two relatives of the victims for questioning. Of them, Md Sharif, husband of victim Lamia, works at a mobile phone shop in Dhaka. He went to Narayanganj on Friday.
Besides, Taslima’s husband Shafiqul Islam, a car driver, who was missing after the murders, was picked up from a private hospital in Dhaka. He got admitted to the hospital after he fell sick receiving the news of murders. He was taken to Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station on Sunday for quizzing.
“The children were killed in such a way that the assassins tried to hide evidences apparently to dodge the investigators to find out any clue. It’s a very tragic incident. The real killers will be identified and brought to book soon,” Benjir Ahmed, Director General, Rapid Action Battalion [RAB], said on Sunday. The RAB DG said, “RAB has been conducting ‘shadow investigation’ into the five-murder incident. Half of the investigation of the incident has already been completed in the meantime.”
As per information given by victim’s family members, Morshed had a dispute with a group in Dhaka over payment of interest on loan, which may be the motive behind the murders. Investigators also suspect Lamia had an affair with Mahfuz.
Deputy Inspector General of Police [Dhaka Range] Mahafuzul Hoque Nuruzzaman said, “The rest of food found in the house has been sent to forensic laboratory to examine whether there was any poisonous material. Investigation of the case will complete soon. It’s not possible to disclose everything at this moment for the sake of investigation.”
Focusing some vital points of the killings, Superintendent of Police in Narayanganj Mahid Uddin said, “In preliminary investigation, we suspect that the reason behind the five-murder was family feud. Because, the door was locked from the outside and nobody had heard any noise. We also suspect that the killers were known to victims. But the killers were not professional, we think.”
The SP said, “The children were killed here. Generally, the children remain out of target of killers in such incidents. But here, the assailants killed the children apparently to hide their identity. The murders were probably committed between noon and early evening on Saturday.” “The victims may have been given sedatives before the murder. Our forensic experts are still examining the evidence,” Assistant Superintendent Ehsan Uddin Chowdhury of Narayanganj CID said.
Police found two of the bodies in one room, on a bed and on the floor and three others were recovered from the floor of another room. Victim Taslima’s sister-in-law Hazera Begum went to the house around 9:00pm, found the door locked from the outside and could not reach the family over the phone. She then informed the local police station, police said. Meanwhile, the forensic experts quoting autopsy reports claimed that the victims of five-murder incident died due to head injuries.
“The victims died due to head injuries. The assassins beat the victims with heavy iron bar or something like that on the heads severely. Most of the injury marks were found on their heads. Besides, no sharp weapon injury was found in their throats.” said Md Asaduzzaman, Residential Medical Officer of Narayanganj Victoria General Hospital.
Previously, it was suspected that the children were strangled to death while the adults were found dead with their throats slit.
