The country marked upward trend in the rate of inflation for the first time in the current fiscal year 2014-15 as it stood at 6.14 per cent in February as against 6.04 percent in January, according to latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).”Additional expenditure in non-food items especially house rent and school fees in January and February has fuelled to increase the rate of point-to-point inflation” Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal said today while releasing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) at a press conference at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Apart from the general inflation, rate of food inflation and non-food inflation has also witnessed increase.The food inflation in national level stood at 6.11 per cent, which was 6.07 per cent in January while the non-food inflation at 6.20 percent against 6.01 percent in January.
On the other hand, the rate of inflation in the urban level stood at 6.62 per cent and rural level at 5.89 per cent.In the rural level, the food inflation stood at 5.72 per cent, down from 5.79 per cent in the previous month, while the non-food inflation increased to 6.22 per cent as against 5.84 per cent in January. Besides, in the urban areas the food inflation stood at 7.02 per cent, up from 6.69 per cent. But, the non-food inflation witnessed downward trend and it stood at 6.18 per cent as against 6.25 per cent in January. The national wage index rate witnessed a 9.24 per cent growth in February with 8986.37 point which was 8876.25 point in January. The average year to year rate of inflation from March 2014 to February 2015 also rose to 6.76 per cent compared to 7.57 per cent from March 2013 to February 2014.
