The four phases of 5th upazila Parishad election has ended amid cheers and joys though the voters’ turn out was below expected level. However, the fifth phase will be held on June 18.
As per prediction, Awami League swept the polls, particularly when the main opposition out side the Parliament boycotted. They secured 68 percent of upazila chairmen posts, while independents captured 31 percent. The Jatiya Party and the Jatiya Party (Monju) won the remaining posts.
AL wins 286 chairmen posts so far, which is 67.93
percent of the total so far held. Interestingly, 92 AL candidates were elected unopposed, which is 32.16 percent of their figure.
On the other hand, the independent candidates bagged 131 chairmen posts, which is 31.11 percent of the total.
Unopposed winners were 93 including one independent candidate. The others were AL candidates.
The first phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad election was held on March 10 in 78 upazilas. Fifty-six AL contestants won where 14 chairman were unopposed and 23 independents secured their victory. In first phase 43 per cent vote have been cast..
The second phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad election was held on March 18 in 116 upazilas. Seventy-four AL contestants won where 23 chairman were elected unopposed and 38 independents secured their victory where one only was elected unopposed. In this phase, Jatiya Party won two in upazila Parishads. In the second phase, 41 per cent votes cast.
The third phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad election was held on March 24 in 117 upazilas. Eighty-three AL contestants won where 31 chairman were elected unopposed while 38 independents secured their victory. In third phase 41 per cent votes cast.
The fourth phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad election was held on March 31 in 107 upazilas. Seventy-three AL contestants won, where 24 chairman were elected unopposed and 32 independents came out with flying colours. In this phase Jatiya Party (Monju) won one in upazila Parishad only. In fourth phase 37 percent votes were franchised.
