UP elections: AL wins 384 chairman posts, BNP 62

Awami League won 384 chairman posts while its arch rival BNP only 62 in the sixth and final phase elections held on Saturday.
With 22 AL chairman candidates elected uncontested, the total number of the party’s winning contestants now stands at 406. Besides, two interdependent candidates won the chairman post unopposed. Though election was held in 699 UPs in this phase, the unofficial results of 674 UPs were available in the Election Commission Secretariat till Sunday afternoon. Besides, 185 independent candidates won chairman posts while
HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party bagged 16 chairman posts in the elections, according to EC’s statistics.
The EC Secretariat office told UNB that the election results of all UPs are yet to reach the office from the field.
Earlier in the first five phases of elections, AL won 2,219 chairman posts, including 182 uncontested ones, while BNP won 311 ones and independent candidates 696, including one candidate elected uncontested and HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party 41 posts. In the wake of election violence that killed over 100 people in the five phases of the UP polls, the EC had taken a few preventive measures for the final phase election.
Voting in the 6th and final phase election to 698 union parishads (UPs) of 82 upazilas of the country’s 64 districts was held on Saturday amid sporadic violence that left four people dead in Noakhali, Feni, Mymensingh and Sunamganj districts.
