AL to observe Jan 5 as Day of Victory for Democracy

The ruling Awami League will observe January 5 as the Day of Victory for Democracy.
The party has decided to observe the day in all the upazila and district headquarters with elaborate programmes including bringing out of colourful marches.
Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, MP, disclosed this to reporters at a press conference emerging from a joint meeting at the political office of party president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city.
Awami League presidium member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury chaired the meeting.
Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said, “There would have been a constitutional crisis
 had the January 5 national polls of 2014 not been held. Many persons remarked that there would have been a situation like civil war in the country.”
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina retained the democratic process in the country overcoming many hurdles and impediments and for this reason, the Awami League has taken a decision to observe the day as the Day of Victory for Democracy in a befitting manner.
In reply to a question on BNP’s counter programme on the day, the Awami League leader said, “It not a matter of consideration to our party. As a political party, Awami League will continue to observe democratic programmes.”
Besides, he said, the Awami League will observe the Martyred Intellectuals Day on December 14, the Victory Day on December 16 and the Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu on January 10 in a befitting manner.
Awami League (AL) presidium member Satish Chandra Roy, joint general secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, central leaders Abdur Rahman, Ahmed Hossain, Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram), acting president of Dhaka City AL MA Aziz, state minister for ICT affairs (Information and Communication Technology) Junaid Ahmed Palak and party parliamentarians of Dhaka City and presidents and general secretaries of AL’s associate bodies attended the meeting, among others.
