Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said that his party would finalise its candidates for the two city corporation’s mayor posts.
The names of the prospective AL candidates will be known after a meeting of the party’s Local Government Nomination Board scheduled to be held at Prime Minister’s official residence Gono Bhaban at 6:00 pm on Saturday, Quader said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting, he added while addressing a press conference at AL President’s Political Office in the city’s Dhanmondi.
On Thursday, incumbent Mayor Sayeed Khokon collected nomination papers from Awami League office to contest in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election scheduled to be held on January 30.
On Wednesday, M Atiqul Islam, who is the incumbent Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, collected AL nomination form for participation in the election while Lawmakers Fazle Nur Tapash and Haji Mohammad Selim bought nomination papers for Dhaka South City.
The elections to Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on January 30.
The last date for submitting nomination papers is December 31 and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is January 9. The EC will scrutinise nomination papers on January 2.
AL-backed Sayeed Khokon and Annisul Huq won in the previous polls held on April 28, 2015.
The party nominated businessperson Atiqul Islam contested the mayoral by-polls held in February this year after the post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
