Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the ruling party will field a ‘winnable’ candidate for the mayor post in the by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation.
He was answering to the questions of newsmen after visiting a patient in a city hospital on Tuesday.
“The government is not making any hurry centering the DNCC election. Rather, the post has been announced vacant as per the existing rules. Here, the Awami League did not interfere. In fact, it was not an issue of Awami League.”
The statement of Obaidul Quader came at a time when some BNP leaders harshly criticised the government for starting the mayor election work soon after the death of Annisul Huq.
Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission announced the DNCC mayor seat vacant in order to hold by-election within next 90 days in line with the Constitution.
Criticizing main opposition BNP, Obaidul Quader said, “I think, the party [BNP] hasn’t enough preparation for DNCC polls. For that reason, they’re making adverse comments regarding the matter….The AL, however, will field a prospected candidate for the post.”
Answering to another query, Obaidul Quader said, “They [BNP] are delivering contradictory statements about the election. Once they said BNP would take part in the polls under any circumstances. Again they said BNP won’t participate in the election in case of Khaleda Zia is conviction by the court. Which one is correct?”
Though the issue of DNCC by-polls is yet not discussed in the ruling party’s policy making body, the insiders said the Awami League is looking for a ‘clean image’ candidate like Annisul Haq for the DNCC mayor post.
The Qulkhwani of Annisul Haq will be held today [Wednesday]. After that, the issue will be placed before the party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a final decision.
Especially, the ruling party is giving special importance to the upcoming by-polls as several senior leaders believe that ‘defeat or win’ at DNCC would create a direct impact on the national elections scheduled in early January in 2019.
Meanwhile, there are widespread rumours that several Awami League leaders, including Dhaka-11 MP AKM Rahmatullah, Sara Begum Kobori, Kamal Ahmed Majumder MP, Saber Hossain Chowdhury and BNP leader Tabith Awal are interested to contest for the post.
The government has already published a gazette notification regarding the vacancy. “As per the rules of law, the Election Commission will hold the DNCC mayor election within 90 days of the gazette publication,” LGRD Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said.
